About the certification system

The International Board for the Certification of Specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IBCSOMS) is an international organization that certifies the ability of an individual in their attainment of the necessary knowledge, experience and skills for a specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) in clinical practice, against international standards by examination. The skill level of certified individuals is known and the certification is useful for professional development. The first IBCSOMS examinations were conducted in March 2015 in Japan (at Osaka University). The examination consisted of a multiple-choice examination of 150 questions and two oral examinations of 45 minutes each (12 cases).

What is a Fellow of the International Board for the Certification of Specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: FIBCSOMS

The post-nominal FIBCOMS is granted through examination by the Certification Board as certification as a world-standard Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. The investiture of those who passed the certification examinations in March 2015 will be conducted in October 2015 in Melbourne. The range of content tested in the certification examination includes not only oral and maxillofacial surgery but basic and emergency medicine such as anesthesia and circulatory diseases, and cases are to be explained to an international standard, meaning that these are oral and maxillofacial surgery specialists who are accepted all over the world. While this is not an international license, it may be utilized in some regions and countries, depending on legislation. Certified specialists must renew their certification annually with the IBCSOMS certification board. In addition, re-certification is required every 10 years.
